La ceremonia empezó fuerte en la premiación previa, la categoría más esperada para los latinos: El mejor disco pop latino. El ganador: Juanes por "La Vida... Es Un Ratico" superando así a Luis Fonsi y a Luis Miguel que también competían en dicha categoría. Jaguares le siguió en el podio, al ganar por mejor producción latina de rock o alternativo, con su disco 45. Estos se impusieron a Ximena Sariñana, la que se voceaba para llevarse el premio. Y por producción de música urbana, los ganadores fueron Wisin y Yandel.Los dueños de la ceremonia central sin duda fue el gupo británico Coldplay que ganaron 2 galardones importantes: Canción del Año [Viva La Vida], Mejor Álbum de Rock [Viva La Vida or Death All His Friends], previamente ya habían ganado por Mejor Actuación Pop Vocal en Dúo o Grupo. Robert Plant y Allison Krauss ganaron 4 gramógrafos previos, ratificando su éxito subieron una vez más al podio para recibir el premio por Mejor Grabación del Año por su canción "Please Read the Letter". La británica Adele de 20 años ganó dos premios: Mejor Interpretación Femenina Vocal [Chasing Pavements] y Mejor Artista Nuevo.
